कोल्हापुरची जुनी टॉकीज आणि सिनेमाचं वेड


हिंदी-मराठी सिनेमाचा १९७० ते १९९० हा काळ वेगळाच होता.

कोल्हापुरातील लक्ष्मीपुरी परिसरात पद्मा, शाहू, राजाराम, रॉयल, प्रभात ही पाच थिएटर्स होती. व्हिनस, लिबर्टी आणि उषा ही तीन व्हिनस कॉर्नरला, बसंत आणि बहार कलेक्टर ऑफिसजवळ, तर उमा आणि पार्वती एका सरळ रस्त्यावर होती. महाद्वार रोडवर सरस्वती, लक्ष्मी आणि कावळा नाक्याकडे संगम अशी थिएटर्स सर्व भागात पसरलेली होती. त्या काळी एकूण १५ टॉकीज होत्या आणि सर्व ठिकाणी सिनेमासक्त प्रेक्षकांमुळे अफाट गर्दी असायची. आता महिनाभरही एक सिनेमा चालत नाही, पण तेव्हा ‘गोल्डन ज्युबिली’चा बोर्ड सर्रास लागायचा. सकाळी ११ ते रात्री १ या वेळेत या भागात प्रचंड वर्दळ असायची. अभिनेते-अभिनेत्रींचे फॅन्स अगदी अंधभक्त — "हा सिनेमा सात वेळा पाहिला!" असं सांगणारे असायचे.

‘फर्स्ट डे फर्स्ट शो’ पाहणारे खरे रसिक मानले जायचे. ब्लॅक मार्केटमध्ये मिळेल त्या दरात तिकीट घेऊन सिनेमा पाहणारेही काही कमी नव्हते. ब्लॅकचा एक वेगळाच फंडा होता — काही चौपट दर देणारे असत, तर काही सिनेमा सुरू होईपर्यंत थांबून निम्म्या दरात तिकीट घेत.

जर इच्छित सिनेमाचं तिकीट मिळालं नाही, तरी जवळच दुसरा सिनेमा उपलब्ध असायचा. काहीजण तर तिकीट काढून सिनेमाच्या सुरुवातीपासून झोप काढत असत! थिएटरमध्ये ‘फर्स्ट’, ‘स्टॉल’, ‘बाल्कनी’ आणि ‘बॉक्स’ असे वर्ग असायचे. बुकिंग ऑफिसवर रांगा लागत आणि फर्स्ट किंवा स्टॉलसाठी तिकीट मिळवणे म्हणजे आव्हानच असायचं. एका अरुंद बोळातून धक्काबुक्की, भिंतीवर चढणारे प्रेक्षक — हे सगळीकडे दिसणारे दृश्य असायचं. तिकीट मिळालेलं प्रेक्षक आनंदाने हातात घेऊन नाचत बाहेर यायचे.

त्या काळातील चित्रपट साधारण तीन तासांचे असायचे. मेरा नाम जोकर हा चार तास चार मिनिटांचा होता. मी तो तीन वेळा पाहिल्यावरच ‘द ग्रेट शोमॅन’चा सिनेमा खऱ्या अर्थाने समजला.

थिएटरमध्ये सिनेमा सुरू झाल्यावर उशिरा येणाऱ्यांना हमखास शिव्या मिळायच्या, कारण डोअरकीपरने बॅटरीचा उजेड मारल्याने सर्वांचे लक्ष विचलित व्हायचे. ट्रेलर्स झाल्यावर मुख्य सिनेमा दाखवला जात असे.

चित्रपटाच्या संवादांना प्रेक्षक ओरडून प्रतिसाद द्यायचे, तर गाण्यांदरम्यान नाणी फेकून उत्साह व्यक्त करायचे. हिरोला “हाण मार!” असे सल्ले देणारेही असायचे.

त्या काळात पत्रलेखन हा छंद लोकप्रिय होता. सिनेमे, गाणी, पुस्तके आणि बिंदू चौकातील सभा हे विषय मुख्यतः पत्रांमध्ये चर्चिले जायचे. तो काळ काही वेगळाच होता… जेव्हा थिएटर म्हणजे फक्त मनोरंजन नव्हतं, तर ती एक भावना होती. सिनेमासोबत जगणारे, गाण्यांवर टाळ्या वाजवणारे आणि हिरोच्या संवादावर आरोळ्या ठोकणारे लोक — हाच होता त्या काळाचा आत्मा.

आज OTT आणि मोबाइलच्या युगात सिनेमा पाहणं सोपं झालंय, पण थिएटरमधल्या त्या गर्दीचा, ब्लॅक तिकीटांच्या गोंधळाचा आणि ‘फर्स्ट डे फर्स्ट शो’च्या थराराचा अनुभव पुन्हा कुठे मिळणार?
